What Is a 2-Hour Marathon

A 2-hour marathon is a distance running event completed in exactly 120 minutes or less. The standard marathon distance is 42.195 kilometers (26.2 miles). Elite runners aim for sub-2-hour times on flat, optimized courses with controlled conditions.

History and Records

For decades, a sub-2-hour marathon was considered a theoretical barrier. In 2019, Eliud Kipchoge ran 1:59:40.2 in Vienna during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, an event not eligible for official world records. The official men's marathon world record is held by Kipchoge at 2:00:35, set at the Berlin Marathon. Women's records remain above 2 hours, with the fastest times in the low 2-hour range.

Pace, Training, and Physiology

To finish a marathon in under 2 hours, runners must sustain a pace of about 4 minutes 35 seconds per kilometer (roughly 2 minutes 50 seconds per mile). This requires exceptional aerobic capacity, efficient running economy, and precise fueling. Training includes high-volume mileage, tempo runs, and race-pace sessions, often supported by data from sports science research on elite endurance performance.
