What Was the Alfred P Murrah Building Bombing

The Alfred P Murrah Federal Building bombing was a domestic terrorist attack in Oklahoma City on April 19, 1995. A truck bomb destroyed the nine-story federal office building, killing 168 people and injuring hundreds. It remains one of the deadliest acts of domestic terrorism in U.S. history.

Who Was Responsible and Why

Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols carried out the attack, motivated by opposition to the federal government, particularly its actions at Ruby Ridge and Waco. McVeigh chose the Murrah Building because it housed offices for the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and other federal agencies.

Aftermath, Trial, and Legacy

Rescue operations involved local, state, and federal agencies, and the attack led to major changes in U.S. domestic security and anti-terrorism policy. McVeigh was convicted and executed in 2001; Nichols received multiple life sentences. Memorials and museum programs preserve the story of the victims and first responders. More details are available at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum website Oklahoma City National Memorial.
