Largest Alligator Ever Recorded
The largest alligator ever officially measured was a massive American alligator harvested in Louisiana in 2014. It measured 15 feet 9 inches long and weighed 1,011.5 pounds, setting a state record documented by Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries.
World Record Size and Weight
While the Louisiana specimen is often cited as the largest, world record claims vary by organization. The International Game Fish Association and state wildlife agencies maintain separate records based on strict measurement rules and verification.
Most record alligators are measured from snout to tail tip, with weight estimated using certified scales. Size alone does not guarantee a world record without proper documentation and chain of custody.
Where Record Alligators Are Found
Record-sized alligators are typically found in the southeastern United States, especially in Louisiana, Florida, and Georgia. These states have large wetland habitats that support high alligator densities and frequent record catches.
