Anne Hathaway Age During Princess Diaries
Anne Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982. She was 19 years old when principal photography began on The Princess Diaries in 2001, and she turned 20 during the shoot.
Character Age Versus Real Age
In the film, Hathaway plays Mia Thermopolis, a teenager turning 16. Because Hathaway was already in her late teens, she could portray the younger character without extensive makeup or casting adjustments.
Why Her Age Mattered for the Role
Casting directors needed an actress who could credibly play a high-school student while handling the film’s comedic and dramatic scenes. Hathaway’s age and natural performance helped make the transformation from awkward teen to princess believable.
