What Is CTE in Athletes?

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive brain condition linked to repeated head impacts. It has been found in athletes across contact sports such as football, boxing, hockey, and soccer.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Common symptoms include memory loss, confusion, impaired judgment, impulse control problems, aggression, depression, and progressive dementia. CTE can only be confirmed after death through brain tissue analysis, though researchers are working on diagnostic markers.

Risk Factors and Research

Risk increases with the length and intensity of exposure to repetitive head trauma. Studies of former athletes have helped identify patterns of brain changes associated with CTE.
