Bashar al-Assad Family Background

Bashar al-Assad is the president of Syria. He was born in 1965 in Damascus. He is the second son of Hafez al-Assad, who ruled Syria from 1971 until his death in 2000. The family belongs to the Alawite community, a minority sect in Syria. Bashar studied medicine at the University of Damascus and later specialized in ophthalmology in London.

Immediate Family Members

Bashar al-Assad is married to Asma al-Assad, born in London to Syrian parents. They have three children together. His older brother, Bassel al-Assad, was being groomed for leadership before his death in 1994. After Bassel's death, Bashar returned to Syria and entered the military academy, eventually succeeding his father as president in 2000.
