What Is the Blue Spix Macaw

The blue Spix macaw is a small, vivid blue parrot native to Brazil. It is one of the world’s most endangered birds, known for its long tail, pale blue-gray plumage, and dark beak.

Habitat, Diet, and Behavior

Historically, the blue Spix macaw lived in dry Caatinga woodland and gallery forests in northeastern Brazil, where it fed on seeds, nuts, and fruits. It is a social, vocal species that nests in tree cavities.

Conservation Status and Recovery Efforts

The blue Spix macaw is classified as Extinct in the Wild by the IUCN, with the last confirmed wild sighting in 2000. Captive breeding programs led by the Chico Mendes Institute and international partners have reintroduced birds into protected areas in Brazil.
