What Is a Brain Eating Amoeba

A brain eating amoeba refers to Naegleria fowleri, a microscopic organism found in warm freshwater. It causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis, a rare and severe brain infection. The amoeba enters the body through the nose, usually during swimming or diving.

Lake Erie and Naegleria Fowleri

Lake Erie is a large, shallow Great Lake that can reach warm temperatures in summer. These conditions may support the presence of Naegleria fowleri in sediment and shoreline waters. Infections linked to this lake are very rare, but health agencies monitor water conditions and issue public guidance.

Symptoms, Risks, and Prevention

Early symptoms include headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting, followed by stiff neck, confusion, and seizures. The infection progresses quickly and is often fatal. To reduce risk, avoid jumping or diving into warm freshwater, hold your nose underwater, and keep your head above the surface. For more information, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention page on Naegleria fowleri at https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/naegleria/.
