Can a Blind Person Get an Eye Transplant

A full eye transplant is not currently possible. Surgeons cannot transplant an entire eye and restore vision because the optic nerve does not regenerate. In rare cases, people with severe eye damage may receive a corneal transplant, which replaces only the front surface of the eye.

What Types of Eye Transplants Exist

The most common procedure is a corneal transplant. It replaces a damaged or cloudy cornea with a healthy donor cornea. This surgery can improve vision when blindness is caused by corneal scarring, keratoconus, or certain injuries. Other procedures, such as artificial corneas, are used when donor tissue is not suitable.

Who May Be Eligible for Eye Surgery

Eligibility depends on the cause of blindness and the health of remaining eye structures. People with corneal conditions or certain injuries may be candidates, while those with optic nerve damage or retinal blindness usually are not. A specialist can evaluate whether a transplant or other surgery is an option.
