Can Yankee Players Have Beards
The New York Yankees are one of the few MLB teams with a strict grooming policy that generally prohibits beards. Players are expected to be clean-shaven or have neatly trimmed mustaches, though the exact interpretation has shifted slightly over the years.
History of the Yankees Grooming Policy
The policy dates back to the 1970s under owner George Steinbrenner, who wanted players to project a conservative, professional image. It became a defining part of the Yankees brand and has been enforced consistently, with only limited exceptions for mustaches and goatees.
Current Rules and Exceptions
Today, the Yankees still maintain a conservative grooming standard, though enforcement is less strict than in earlier decades. Players may have closely trimmed facial hair in some cases, but full beards remain rare.
