What Is Alpha Gal Syndrome

Alpha gal syndrome is an allergic reaction to the sugar molecule galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose found in most mammals. It is mainly linked to bites from the lone star tick, which can sensitize the immune system. Reactions typically occur after eating red meat or exposure to other mammalian products.

Can Alpha Gal Be Fatal

In rare cases, alpha gal reactions can lead to anaphylaxis, a severe, life-threatening allergic response. Anaphylaxis can cause airway swelling, a sharp drop in blood pressure, and shock if not treated quickly. Prompt use of epinephrine and emergency medical care are essential.

Symptoms, Triggers, and Management

Common symptoms include hives, swelling, nausea, diarrhea, and breathing difficulty, often appearing hours after exposure. Avoiding mammalian meat, offal, and certain dairy products can reduce risk. Patients are advised to carry an epinephrine auto-injector and work with a healthcare provider for diagnosis and an emergency plan.
