What Are Cannibal Snakes

Cannibal snakes are snakes that regularly consume other snakes, including members of their own species. This behavior, called ophiophagy, is common in several snake families and is driven by prey availability, competition, and size advantages.

Species Known for Cannibalism

Species such as kingsnakes, coachwhips, and indigo snakes are well known for eating other snakes, including venomous pit vipers. Kingsnakes, for example, are resistant to pit viper venom and actively hunt them, often targeting snakes of similar or smaller size.

Why Snakes Eat Other Snakes

Cannibalism in snakes often occurs when preferred prey is scarce or when large individuals can easily overpower smaller ones. It also helps reduce competition for food and territory, and in some species it may provide a reliable food source with minimal risk.
