Current Conservation Status

The giant panda is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List after decades of habitat loss and low birth rates. In 2016, the IUCN downgraded the species from Endangered to Vulnerable following a population increase. The latest national survey in China estimates over 1,800 wild individuals.

Key Threats to Survival

Habitat fragmentation remains the main threat, caused by roads, infrastructure, and climate-driven changes in bamboo forests. Small, isolated populations face higher risks from disease, inbreeding, and extreme weather events that can damage bamboo die-offs.

Recovery Efforts and Outlook

China has expanded protected areas, created ecological corridors, and enforced stricter anti-poaching laws. Captive breeding programs and reintroduction projects have supported population growth. Continued monitoring, habitat protection, and community engagement remain essential to maintain the panda’s improved status.
