What Is the Crescent Moon and Planet Venus?

The crescent moon is the lunar phase when less than half of the Moon is illuminated by sunlight. Planet Venus, the second planet from the Sun, often appears as a bright point of light near the Moon. Together they form a common and easily recognized sight in the evening or morning sky.

Why Do They Appear Together?

Venus orbits closer to the Sun than Earth, so it is frequently seen near the Moon. Their alignment is a line-of-sight effect from Earth. Both objects reflect sunlight, and their relative positions change nightly due to their orbital motions.

How to Observe the Crescent Moon and Venus

Look for the pair low in the western sky after sunset or in the eastern sky before sunrise. Binoculars can reveal the Moon's thin crescent and Venus's disk. For more observing tips, see NASA's skywatching guide at https://science.nasa.gov/skywatching/.
