Venomous Snakes in North Carolina

North Carolina is home to several venomous pit vipers, including copperheads, cottonmouths, and timber rattlesnakes. Copperheads are the most common cause of snakebite in the state. Bites are rarely fatal with prompt medical care, but they can cause severe pain, swelling, and tissue damage.

Dangerous Spiders and Other Wildlife

The black widow spider is found across North Carolina and can deliver a medically significant bite. Brown recluse spiders are less common but occasionally reported. In addition, coyotes, black bears, and feral hogs may pose risks when encountered near homes or trails.

Sharks and Marine Hazards

North Carolina's coast sees occasional shark encounters, with species such as bull sharks and spinner sharks present in warmer months. According to the International Shark Attack File, the state has recorded unprovoked bites over the decades, mostly during summer. Jellyfish and stingrays can also cause painful injuries in coastal waters.

To reduce risk, avoid tall grass and brush where snakes hide, check shoes and clothing left outdoors, and stay alert in shallow coastal water. If bitten by any venomous animal, seek emergency medical care immediately and avoid tourniquets or cutting the wound.
