What Is a Diamond in a Diamond?

A diamond in a diamond is a rare natural diamond that contains a smaller, fully formed diamond crystal trapped inside it. The inner diamond is surrounded by the host stone, creating a distinctive layered appearance. These inclusions are sometimes called "diamond within a diamond" or double diamonds in gemological descriptions.

How Does a Diamond in a Diamond Form?

Natural diamonds form deep in the mantle under extreme heat and pressure. During growth, a smaller diamond crystal can become enclosed inside the host diamond. Over millions of years, both stones are brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions and later recovered from alluvial or kimberlite deposits. The inner crystal remains intact because it forms under similar conditions.

Value and Uses of Diamond in a Diamond

Because of their extreme rarity, diamond in a diamond stones command high prices among collectors and investors. Their value depends on the size, clarity, and position of the inner crystal, as well as the quality of the host diamond. These gems are often set in high-end jewelry or kept as investment pieces. Gemological labs such as the Gemological Institute of America can verify their authenticity and origin.
