Margaret was reportedly in love with Group Captain Peter Townsend, a divorced Royal Air Force officer. Because of Townsend's divorce and the Church of England rules at the time, the marriage was blocked by the government and the sovereign.
Why Princess Margaret Did Not Marry
The 1955 Letters Patent required the sovereign's consent for members of the royal family to marry. Margaret chose not to pursue the marriage publicly, and Townsend later married someone else. She later had a long relationship with photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, whom she did marry in 1960.
