What Are Moon Phases

Moon phases are the changing shapes of the Moon as seen from Earth. They happen because the Moon orbits Earth, changing the way sunlight reflects off its surface. The main cycle repeats roughly every 29.5 days.

The Eight Main Moon Phases

The eight primary phases are New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter, and Waning Crescent. During a New Moon, the Moon is between Earth and the Sun, making it mostly invisible. A Full Moon occurs when Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, and the entire face appears bright.

Why Moon Phases Matter

Moon phases influence ocean tides, with Spring Tides during New and Full Moons and Neap Tides during Quarter Moons. They also guide traditional calendars, farming practices, and cultural events. For more details on lunar cycles, see NASA Moon Phases.
