What Are Survivor Benefits

Survivor benefits are monthly payments from Social Security to eligible family members after a worker dies. They help replace lost income for spouses, children, and dependent parents. Payments are based on the deceased worker’s earnings record.

When Do Survivor Benefits End

Benefits typically end when a child reaches age 18 or 19 if still in high school full time. Disabled children may continue if the disability began before age 22. Spousal benefits usually stop at full retirement age unless caring for a child under 16 or disabled. Benefits also end if a recipient remarries before age 60.

How to Apply and Check Status

You can apply online through the Social Security Administration website or by calling their helpline. Have the deceased person’s Social Security number, death certificate, and your own documents ready. You can track your application status on the SSA portal.

For detailed eligibility rules and payment amounts, visit the official Social Security Administration page on survivor benefits at https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/survivors/.
