Everglades Alligator vs Crocodile

The American alligator is common in the Everglades, while the American crocodile is rare and found mostly in coastal areas. Alligators have a wider, U-shaped snout, and crocodiles have a narrower, V-shaped snout. Crocodiles also show more of their lower teeth when their mouths are closed.

Habitat and Behavior

Both species live in freshwater marshes, rivers, and brackish water. They are most active in warm months and often bask on banks or float with only their eyes and nostrils above water. The Everglades provides nesting sites and prey such as fish, birds, and small mammals.

Safety and Viewing Tips

Alligators and crocodiles can be dangerous if approached or fed. Visitors should stay at least 60 feet away, avoid swimming outside marked areas, and keep pets leashed. For more information on safe wildlife viewing, visit Everglades National Park.
