Where Fatal Crocodile Attacks Happen

Fatal crocodile attacks occur mainly in tropical regions of Africa, Asia, Australia, and parts of the Americas. Saltwater crocodiles in the Indo Pacific and Nile crocodiles in sub Saharan Africa are responsible for most human fatalities. Attacks are common near riverbanks, lakes, estuaries, and coastal mangroves where people wash clothes, fish, or collect water.

How Fatal Attacks Occur

Most fatal attacks happen when people enter water unexpectedly or approach too close to a crocodile. Crocodiles use a burst of speed, a powerful bite, and a death roll to subdue prey. Dawn, dusk, and night are high risk times. Provocation, splashing, and swimming in known crocodile habitats increase the chance of an encounter.

Prevention and Survival Steps

Stay at least several meters from the water edge, avoid swimming in crocodile habitats, and keep pets and children away from the shoreline. If charged, run straight away from the water. If seized, fight back, target the eyes and throat, and seek emergency medical care immediately for wound treatment and infection control.
