Olympic Figure Skating Origins

Figure skating debuted at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London before moving to the Winter Games. The first Winter Olympics in 1924 in Chamonix included men's and women's singles, establishing the sport as a core Olympic discipline. Early competitions emphasized compulsory figures and free skating.

Disciplines and Olympic Events

The Olympic program expanded with ice dance added in 1976 and pair skating featured since 1908. In 2014, the team event was introduced, combining men's and women's singles, pairs, and ice dance. The International Skating Union governs rules and scoring for Olympic figure skating events.

Notable Champions and Milestones

Katarina Witt, Sonja Henie, and Oksana Baiul are among the most decorated Olympic figure skaters. In 2022, Kamila Valieva's case highlighted anti-doping challenges at the Games. The sport continues to evolve with technical upgrades and judging reforms overseen by the ISU and the IOC.
