What Is the TSA Fluid Allowance?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) limits liquids, gels, and aerosols in carry-on bags to containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less per item. All containers must fit inside a single quart-sized, clear, zip-top plastic bag. This rule applies to water, beverages, toiletries, and similar items.

Why Does TSA Restrict Liquids?

TSA restricts liquids to reduce potential security risks during screening. Small containers are easier to inspect and limit the amount of any single hazardous material a passenger can bring onboard. The policy applies to all passengers flying from U.S. airports and to many international flights.

How to Pack Liquids for TSA Compliance

Place each liquid container in the quart-sized bag, ensuring it closes fully. Remove the bag from your carry-on for separate screening at the checkpoint. Medically necessary liquids, baby formula, and breast milk may be exempt from the 3.4-ounce limit but may require additional screening. For official guidance, visit TSA Liquids Rule.
