Formation and Original Lineup

The Foo Fighters began as a one-man project by Dave Grohl after Nirvana ended in 1994. The first official lineup included Grohl on vocals and guitar, along with guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer William Goldsmith.

Early Albums and Band Evolution

The band released their self-titled debut album in 1995, recorded largely by Grohl alone. By the second album, The Colour and the Shape, Grohl had rebuilt the rhythm section with Mendel and drummer Taylor Hawkins, solidifying the core lineup.

Current Status of Original Members

Pat Smear left after the early tours but later returned as a touring and recording member. Nate Mendel and Taylor Hawkins remained central figures in the band for decades. Hawkins passed away in 2022, and the band continues with remaining members and new touring musicians.
