Safe Cooking and Cooling

Place eggs in a single layer in a saucepan, cover with cold water by about one inch, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat, cover, and let stand 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer eggs to an ice bath and cool completely before peeling. This process reduces the risk of bacterial growth and makes peeling easier.

Storage Guidelines

Refrigerate hard boiled eggs within two hours of cooking. Keep them in their shells until ready to eat, and store in a clean, covered container. Peeled eggs should be submerged in water in a sealed container and changed daily. Use cooked eggs within one week for best safety.

Checking Freshness and Spoilage

Hard boiled eggs can spoil if left at room temperature too long or stored past their safe window. Check for a sulfurous smell, slimy texture, or discoloration. If any sign of spoilage is present, discard the egg immediately. For more on safe egg handling, see the United States Department of Agriculture guidelines.
