What Does Taking a Knee Mean in Football

In American football, taking a knee refers to a player, usually the quarterback, deliberately kneeling on one knee while holding the ball. The play ends immediately, and the clock stops, allowing the team to run out the remaining time without risking a turnover or injury.

Why Players Take a Knee During a Game

Teams use the kneel to protect a lead, preserve timeouts, or end a half safely. It is a standard, low-risk strategy taught in basic offensive playbooks. A player can also take a knee to avoid a sack or to stop the clock near the end of a half.

Kneeling as a Social Gesture in the NFL

Outside of strategy, some players have knelt during the national anthem to protest social issues, particularly police brutality and racial inequality. This gesture gained widespread attention in 2016 when quarterback Colin Kaepernick first sat, and later knelt, during pregame ceremonies. The NFL later acknowledged the controversy and apologized for its handling of player protests.
