Who Were Gary Condit and Chandra Levy

Gary Condit was a U.S. congressman from California who represented the Central Valley district from 1989 to 2003. Chandra Levy was a young federal intern at the Bureau of Prisons who disappeared in Washington, D.C., in May 2001. Their connection drew intense media attention because Condit had an acknowledged close relationship with Levy.

Disappearance and Investigation

Levy last spoke to her family on May 1, 2001, and was reported missing by her parents a week later. Police focused on Condit early in the investigation because he was evasive during interviews and had ended the affair. Despite extensive searches, her remains were not found until May 2002, when a man searching for his missing dog discovered bones in an isolated area of Rock Creek Park.

Aftermath and Current Status

In 2002, Ingmar Guandique, an illegal immigrant with a history of assaults in the park, was charged with Levy's murder. He was convicted in 2010, but the conviction was overturned in 2015, and prosecutors later declined to retry him. Condit left Congress in 2003 and largely avoided public commentary on the case.
