Gavan O'Herlihy on Happy Days
Gavan O'Herlihy played Richie Cunningham's older cousin, Chuck Cunningham, in early episodes of Happy Days. He appeared in a small number of first-season episodes before the character was written out. The role is one of the show's most discussed casting changes.
Who Is Gavan O'Herlihy
Gavan O'Herlihy was an Irish actor and son of actor Dan O'Herlihy. He studied at drama schools in London and worked in film and television across the United Kingdom and the United States. His career included roles in movies and series beyond Happy Days.
Why Chuck Cunningham Left Happy Days
Chuck Cunningham was dropped from Happy Days after the first season. The show's producers recast the older brother role, and the character was largely written out of later storylines. This kind of recasting was common in long-running sitcoms of the era.
