Gene Hackman in The Birdcage presents a quieter counterpoint to the film’s vibrant, comic center while still exemplifying his measured, character-driven approach to acting. Released in 1996, The Birdcage is a high-profile Hollywood comedy that updates the French play La Cage aux Folles for a modern audience, centering on a gay nightclub owner and his flamboyant partner preparing for the marriage of their son. Hackman takes on the role of Senator Kevin Keeley, a closeted politician whose understated presence underscores the tension between public image and private truth, offering a subdued but pivotal anchor within the film’s bustling energy.
