Who Is the Oldest Person Alive
The title of oldest person alive is held by the individual verified by Guinness World Records as the longest-living person currently living. As of the latest verification, this title belongs to Tomiko Itooka of Japan, born on May 23, 1908. Her age is documented through government records and validated by the Gerontology Research Group, which collaborates with Guinness World Records on longevity claims.
How Guinness World Records Verifies Age
Guinness World Records requires official birth or baptism records, government-issued identity documents, and at least one independent witness. Researchers cross-check family histories, census data, and civil registries. Claims are only accepted when documentation is consistent, complete, and free of gaps. This process helps prevent errors and fraudulent age claims.
Why Longevity Records Change Frequently
Records change because previous holders pass away and new supercentenarians are discovered or validated. Verification can take months or years, especially in regions with incomplete archives. Organizations like the Gerontology Research Group and Guinness World Records continuously review new cases. Until documentation is fully reviewed and accepted, a person is not officially recognized as the oldest.
