What Was Comet Hale-Bopp
Comet Hale-Bopp is a bright long-period comet discovered in 1995 by Alan Hale and Thomas Bopp. It became visible to the naked eye for 18 months, making it one of the most observed comets of the 20th century. Its nucleus is estimated to be about 60 kilometers wide, and it reached perihelion in April 1997.
Heaven's Gate and the Hale-Bopp Connection
Heaven's Gate was a UFO religious group led by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles. The group believed that an alien spacecraft was following Comet Hale-Bopp and that followers could reach a higher level of existence by leaving their bodies behind. In March 1997, 39 members died in a coordinated mass suicide in San Diego County, California.
Aftermath and Legacy
The incident drew global attention and raised questions about cult dynamics and media influence. Investigators found that members had ingested phenobarbital and vodka, and some wore matching black clothing and Nike shoes. The event remains a reference point in discussions about belief systems, online misinformation, and group behavior.
