Has a New Pope Been Elected in 2025
As of mid-2025, the Catholic Church has not announced the election of a new pope. The position remains with the current pontiff, and no conclave has been convened. Any future election will follow established canon law and be communicated through official Vatican channels.
How a Pope Is Elected
A new pope is elected by cardinals under the age of 80 during a conclave held in the Vatican. Voting continues until one candidate receives a two-thirds majority. The process is secret, and white smoke signals a successful election.
What Triggers a Papal Election
A papal election is triggered when the papal office becomes vacant, usually following the death or resignation of the pope. The College of Cardinals manages the process, and the new pope is announced once elected. Official updates are published by the Holy See.
