What Are Hillsong and Bethel Churches?
Hillsong Church and Bethel Church are large Christian organizations known for global worship music and church planting. Hillsong was founded in Australia and grew into an international network. Bethel operates from Redding, California, and is associated with the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry. Both have attracted large followings and significant media attention.
Financial Structure and Public Scrutiny
Both churches operate as private religious organizations with limited public financial disclosure. Hillsong has reported revenues from global donations, conferences, and merchandise, while Bethel relies on tithes, offerings, and its school programs. Investigative reports and former members have raised questions about leadership compensation, property holdings, and use of funds. In some cases, church leaders have faced criticism for high salaries and expensive facilities.
Key Allegations and Official Responses
Former leaders and critics have accused both churches of spiritual abuse, authoritarian leadership, and insufficient financial transparency. Hillsong has acknowledged governance failures and leadership changes in response to scandals. Bethel has stated that it follows standard nonprofit practices and encourages accountability. Independent journalists and watchdog groups continue to examine their operations and public statements.
