Origins of the Union Jack

The British flag, known as the Union Jack, combines the crosses of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The English St George's Cross and the Scottish St Andrew's Cross were first merged in 1606 after the union of the crowns.

Design and Symbolism

The current design dates from 1801, when the Irish St Patrick's Saltire was added following the Act of Union. Each cross represents a patron saint, and the overlapping arrangement creates the distinctive canton pattern seen on official flags.

Usage and Official Status

The Union Jack is flown on government buildings, embassies, and at sea as the national ensign. Its correct display is regulated by custom and official guidance, and it remains a widely recognized symbol of the United Kingdom and its overseas territories.
