Origins of the English Monarchy

The English monarchy traces its roots to Anglo-Saxon kingdoms such as Wessex. In 927, Æthelstan became the first king to rule a unified England. Succession often passed through family lines, though rival claims and conquests shaped early royal history.

Tudor and Stuart Dynasties

The Tudor dynasty began with Henry VII after the Wars of the Roses. His son Henry VIII reshaped religion and governance. The Stuarts followed, bringing periods of personal rule and civil conflict. The Glorious Revolution of 1688 limited royal power and strengthened Parliament.

Modern Royal Family and Constitutional Role

The House of Hanover began in 1714, later replaced by the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, renamed Windsor in 1917. Today the royal family serves a ceremonial role under a constitutional framework. The monarch opens Parliament, approves legislation, and represents national continuity.
