Average Size of a Direwolf

Direwolves (Canis dirus) were larger than modern gray wolves. They stood about 60 to 80 cm (24 to 31 in) at the shoulder and measured roughly 1.5 to 2 meters (5 to 6.5 ft) in body length, with a long tail.

Weight and Build

Adult direwolves likely weighed between 50 and 80 kg (110 to 175 lb), with some individuals exceeding 90 kg (200 lb). Their bones were thicker and their limbs more robust than those of today’s wolves.

Comparison to Modern Wolves

Modern gray wolves typically weigh 30 to 65 kg (66 to 145 lb) and stand about 66 to 81 cm (26 to 32 in) at the shoulder, making direwolves noticeably larger and heavier on average.
