Global Prevalence of Chagas Disease

Chagas disease affects an estimated 6 to 7 million people worldwide, mostly in Latin America. The World Health Organization considers it a neglected tropical disease with significant public health impact in endemic regions.

How Common Is Chagas Disease in the United States

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that more than 300,000 people live with Chagas disease. Most cases are acquired in endemic countries, though local transmission is possible in certain areas.

Transmission and Risk Factors

The disease is mainly spread by triatomine bugs, also known as kissing bugs. It can also transmit through blood transfusions, organ transplants, and from mother to baby during pregnancy. Early detection and treatment reduce serious complications.
