How George Floyd Died

George Floyd died on May 25, 2020, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after Derek Chauvin, a police officer, pressed his knee to Floyd's neck and back for several minutes while Floyd was restrained on the ground. Body camera footage, bystander video, and autopsy reports documented that Floyd repeatedly stated he could not breathe, became unresponsive, and was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Hennepin County medical examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by cardiopulmonary arrest during police restraint, with underlying health conditions also noted.

Immediate Aftermath and Protests

Following Floyd's death, protests erupted in Minneapolis and quickly spread to cities across the United States and worldwide. Demonstrations focused on police brutality, racial injustice, and accountability. In Minneapolis, the third police precinct station was damaged and later closed. Local and state leaders imposed curfews and deployed National Guard troops. Many cities and organizations initiated reviews of police policies and use-of-force training in response to public pressure.

Derek Chauvin was convicted in April 2021 on federal and state charges, including second-degree unintentional murder and third-degree murder. In December 2022, he pleaded guilty to federal civil rights charges and was sentenced to 21 years in prison. Three other officers involved were later convicted in federal court for violating Floyd's civil rights. The incident accelerated legislative discussions and local policy changes related to policing, use-of-force standards, and officer accountability in multiple U.S. states and cities.
