How Many Animals Went Extinct in 2025
In 2025, official lists and conservation bodies confirmed the extinction of a small number of animal species, primarily island endemics and freshwater fauna. The exact count varies by source, but several species were declared extinct after exhaustive surveys failed to find remaining populations. These losses reflect ongoing pressures from habitat destruction, invasive species, and climate change.
Species Confirmed Extinct in 2025
Among the documented losses are a handful of birds, amphibians, and invertebrates that once survived in highly restricted ranges. Many of these species had been listed as critically endangered or possibly extinct for years before formal confirmation. Researchers cited habitat fragmentation and disease as key drivers, with some extinctions linked to extreme weather events amplified by climate change.
Why Accurate Counts Remain Difficult
Determining how many animals went extinct in 2025 is complicated by incomplete surveys in remote areas and delayed assessments for poorly known taxa. Conservation organizations update extinction databases gradually, and new species continue to be described even as others disappear. For the latest confirmed figures, refer to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List and the IUCN Extinct Species Database.
