How Many Kings and Queens of England

England has had 41 monarchs who used the title King or Queen of England, from the early Anglo-Saxon rulers to Queen Anne in 1707. After the Acts of Union, the title changed to King or Queen of Great Britain and later the United Kingdom.

Kings of England

The majority of English monarchs were kings, including figures such as Alfred the Great, Athelstan, and Henry VIII. Many ruled before the Norman Conquest in 1066, while others shaped the medieval and early modern periods of English history.

Queens of England

Only a few women ruled as Queens of England, including Matilda, Lady Jane Grey, Mary I, Elizabeth I, and Anne. Their reigns were often short or contested, and the role of queen regnant was rare compared with the number of kings.

For a detailed chronological list of English monarchs, see the official royal records on The Royal Family website.
