What Counts as a National Lampoon Movie
There is no single number that everyone agrees on for how many National Lampoon movies exist because the definition determines the count. This evergreen explainer clarifies what qualifies, lists verified theatrical and direct-to-video titles, and excludes rereleases, TV specials, and compilations that do not constitute original feature films. We focus on productions that bear the National Lampoon brand or are studio-authorized adaptations of Lampoon properties, providing a fact-focused reference you can rely on for years.
Our Definition and Why It Matters
To answer how many National Lampoon movies there are, we first define what we include: features with a direct connection to National Lampoon, either through official licensing or clear creative lineage. We exclude TV movies used only for syndication, compilations of earlier sketches without new narrative, and rereleases that do not represent distinct productions. This standard keeps the list stable over time and ensures each entry represents a coherent, branded film rather than a marketing arrangement or fleeting event.
Key Criteria for Inclusion
- Officially licensed or branded feature films with National Lampoon association.
- Distinct theatrical or direct-to-video productions with original narrative or premise.
- Excludes rereleases, TV specials, and remixes that do not add new material.

Common Misattributions and Exclusions
Several films are mistakenly counted as National Lampoon movies because they share a similar humor or era. We exclude projects that only have tangential ties, such as distribution by a company with Lampoon ties or films that Lampoon opposed. This keeps the list accurate and prevents confusion over what the brand truly represents.
Notable Exclusions
- Movies inspired by Lampoon magazine content but lacking official branding.
- Reissues, repackaged DVD sets, or reedited versions of existing films.
- TV specials and variety shows billed as Lampoon events.
How the List Can Change
The count can shift if a studio releases a previously unlabeled feature under the Lampoon banner or if a direct-to-video title gains wider recognition. Our definition is designed to remain stable by requiring clear brand integration. Until formal rights or production details change, the number of verified features stays consistent and focused on original, branded storytelling rather than legacy associations.
