Who Is the Happy Face Killer
The Happy Face Killer is the nickname of Keith Hunter Jesperson, a Canadian-American serial killer who committed multiple murders across several U.S. states during the late 1980s and early 1990s. He gained attention for leaving smiley face symbols at crime scenes.
How Many People Did the Happy Face Killer Kill
Keith Jesperson has been convicted of eight murders, and he has confessed to killing more than a dozen women overall. The exact total remains uncertain because he killed many victims whose cases were not immediately linked to him, and he only admitted responsibility years after the crimes.
Victim Count and Confirmed Cases
Police confirmed eight murders tied directly to Jesperson, with victims found in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Nebraska. Additional suspected victims were identified later, but charges were not always filed because of a lack of admissible evidence or jurisdictional issues.
Investigation and Capture
Jesperson was arrested after a surviving victim identified him, and he later pleaded guilty to multiple murders in exchange for avoiding the death penalty. He is currently serving life in prison without parole, as reported by the Oregon Department of Corrections and covered by major news outlets including BBC News.
