Answer-first summary
Dean Winchester died a total of six times in the television series Supernatural, with each death followed by resurrection. There is no hidden or unreported canonical death beyond these six. Deaths include dying in the pilot, during Season 3, Season 4, Season 5, Season 7, and Season 15. Reincarnation and wish-artifact timelines are non-canonical resets and are excluded from the main count. This evergreen explainer lists each death, its episode context, and narrative consequences.
Why the confusion: alternate timelines, resets, and retcons
Viewer confusion often stems from alternate timelines, dream sequences, and reality resets. Some storylines show Dean surviving deaths that would otherwise be fatal, or show temporary passes from divine intervention or artifact influence. These variants are not canon replacements for the six core deaths. When counting how many times did Dean die in Supernatural, the reliable answer is six canonical deaths across the main series continuity.
Canonical death 1: Pilot (Season 1, Episode 1)
In the premiere, Dean is killed by a demonically possessed trucker in a car crash while protecting Sam. This death is reversed via a deal with Azazel to resurrect Sam, with Dean’s return achieved through a mysterious deal involving John Winchester’s signed contract.
- Episode: "Pilot" (S1E1 + S1E2)
- Cause: Car crash (demonic involvement)
- Resurrected: Yes, by Azazel’s deal
- Narrative impact: Establishes the series’ core premise of deals, hunters’ mortality, and family obligation.
