How Likely Is a Lightning Strike

Lightning strikes are rare but can be fatal. In the United States, about 20 people die each year from lightning strikes, according to the National Weather Service. Most survivors live, but many have long-term injuries.

Immediate Actions After a Strike

A struck person does not carry an electrical charge and is safe to touch. Call emergency services immediately. Check breathing and pulse, and begin CPR if needed. Move the person away from the strike point if it is still dangerous.

Prevention and Risk Reduction

Seek shelter in a substantial building or hard-topped vehicle when thunder roars. Avoid open fields, tall isolated trees, water, and metal objects. Wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back outside.
