Visual Inspection of the Grenade

Examine the grenade for a raised safety lever, often called the spoon, resting on top. A live grenade usually has the lever held down by a friction ring attached to the pin. If the pin is missing or the lever is released, the grenade may be live or recently fired. Do not touch or move the object.

Markings, Manufacturer Stamps, and Condition

Check for manufacturer stamps, lot numbers, and caliber markings on the body. A live grenade often has intact paint or finish, while a dud or training grenade may show a painted over band, a drilled pin hole, or a missing lever. Corrosion, dents, or old chemical residue can also indicate an aged or unstable device.

Safe Response and Reporting

If you suspect a live grenade, do not attempt to disarm it. Keep a safe distance, prevent others from approaching, and contact local law enforcement or emergency services immediately. In many countries, you can also report the item to bomb disposal units or military ordnance teams for professional handling.

For official guidance on recognizing and reporting unexploded ordnance, refer to the U.S. Department of Defense safety resources at U.S. Department of Defense.
