Look for Visual Body Condition Changes

Stand above your cat and look down. A healthy cat has a visible waist behind the ribs. If the waistline is gone and the belly sways when walking, your cat may be gaining excess fat. You should not be able to feel a thick layer of fat over the ribs when you gently press the sides.

Monitor Weight and Eating Habits

Weigh your cat regularly on a home scale or at the vet. Sudden weight gain or steady increases over weeks can signal fat buildup. Pay attention if your cat finishes meals quickly, begs constantly, or gains weight despite normal portions. These patterns often point to excess calorie intake.

Check Energy and Mobility

A cat gaining fat may become less active, sleep more, and hesitate to jump onto furniture. If grooming becomes difficult or the belly drags on the floor, these are signs of excess weight. Your vet can confirm whether the extra weight is fat and recommend a safe plan.
