Green Iguana

The green iguana is one of the most common invasive lizards in Florida. It damages landscaping, burrows into levees, and can spread salmonella. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission lists it as a prohibited species, and removal is encouraged on private property.

Argentine Black and White Tegu

The Argentine black and white tegu is a large, adaptable predator that threatens native ground-nesting birds, reptiles, and small mammals. It is established in parts of central and south Florida. The FWC classifies tegus as conditional species, and possession without a permit is restricted.

Brown Basilisk and Other Invasive Species

The brown basilisk, also called the Jesus lizard, has small established populations in South Florida. It competes with native lizards and can alter local ecosystems. Other invasive lizards in the state include the Mexican spiny-tailed iguana and the Nile monitor. Learn more about Florida's invasive reptile species at floridainvasives.org/nuisance-reptiles.
