Is Removing Political Signs Illegal in Pennsylvania
Removing political signs in Pennsylvania can be illegal depending on where and how they are taken down. Signs placed on public rights-of-way are often protected by state and local election laws. Taking them down may be treated as interference with political speech or election activity.
Relevant Pennsylvania Laws and Rules
Under Pennsylvania election code, signs on public property or within public rights-of-way are generally regulated by local jurisdictions. Many municipalities have specific ordinances governing political signage, including when it must be removed and who may remove it. For details, refer to the Pennsylvania Code on elections and local municipal ordinances.
Consequences and Practical Guidance
Removing or tampering with political signs can lead to fines, criminal charges, or civil liability, especially if the act is intentional and disrupts election activity. If you see signs on public property, contact your local election office or municipal authority instead of removing them yourself.
