Who Was Michael Rockefeller?
Michael Clark Rockefeller was the son of New York Governor and Vice President Nelson Rockefeller. In 1961, he was a graduate student studying tribal art in the Asmat region of southwestern Netherlands New Guinea, now part of Indonesia.
Official Status and Disappearance
Rockefeller disappeared on November 19, 1961, after his boat capsized near the coast of Agats. He was never found. The official record, maintained by the Rockefeller family and Indonesian authorities, lists him as deceased, presumed drowned or killed.
Why the Question 'Is Michael Rockefeller Still Alive' Persists
The query remains common because the case was never fully resolved. No body was recovered, and some unverified accounts have suggested he survived and was taken in by local communities. Investigators and journalists have documented these claims, but no credible evidence has confirmed he is still alive.
Current Search and Investigative Efforts
Decades after the disappearance, investigators and family members have continued to seek answers. The search has included interviews with Asmat villagers, review of Dutch colonial records, and anthropological studies. For a detailed timeline of the investigation, see the official Rockefeller family archive.
