What Is the Lone Star Tick?

The lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum) is a real species found in the eastern and southeastern United States. It is named for the single white spot on the adult female’s back. It feeds on humans and animals and can transmit pathogens.

Can It Bite Humans?

Yes. The lone star tick bites humans during all active life stages. Bites can cause redness, itching, and sometimes a rash. In some people, the bite may trigger an allergic reaction to red meat, known as alpha-gal syndrome.

How to Prevent and Respond to Bites

Use EPA-approved repellents, wear long sleeves, and check your body after outdoor activities. If you find a tick attached, remove it with fine-tipped tweezers as close to the skin as possible. For identification and bite guidance, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention page on ticks.
